Seattle checklist
How to hire an emergency electrician in Seattle
Seattle and Bellevue each run their own electrical permits and inspections. A licensed electrician working there deals with the city, and should say so.
What to verify
- An L&I electrical contractor license for the company, with a named master electrician or administrator. (RCW 19.28.041)
- An L&I certificate of competency for the electrician at your door. (RCW 19.28.161)
- Both active on L&I Verify, which also shows violations.
Questions for a night call
- Does the rate go up after a certain hour, and is there a charge to come out?
- Can you make it safe tonight and quote the rest for daytime?
- Will you file the permit with the City of Seattle (or Bellevue)?
- Who is coming, and what certificate do they hold?
Red flags
- An unlicensed "electrical handyman." Bidding electrical work without a contractor license is illegal in Washington. (RCW 19.28.041)
- Reluctance to give a license number before arriving.
- Full payment upfront. (L&I)
Permits in Seattle and Bellevue
Both cities appear on L&I's list of cities that issue their own electrical permits and do their own inspections. (L&I) Your electrician files with the city, not with L&I.
Cost
No one publishes Seattle emergency electrician rates, so we don't print any. Ask whether there is a charge to come out, what changes after hours, and whether they charge by the hour or a flat price. Detail in how to compare emergency electrician quotes.
A WA electrical contractor license badge on a listing here means we matched that business by phone and name to an active record in L&I contractor license data on October 17, 2026. Records change. Run the lookup yourself before work starts.
